HMRC is urging parents who claimed child benefit before 2000 to check if they are eligible to increase their state pension.

Some parents who claimed child benefit before 2000 will not be entitled to the full state pension unless they take action to fill gaps in their national insurance records.

Those affected, who are mainly women at, or approaching, state pension age, are advised to check for gaps in their National Insurance record. Some gaps can be resolved at no additional cost.

Parents can check their eligibility and make a claim on gov.uk. the process taking approximately fifteen minutes to complete. They can also claim by post using form CF411.
