UK – Are you eligible to claim marriage allowance?

Tax saving of £252 (potentially a tax savings of £1,242!)

Marriage allowance is a tax perk available to lower income couples who are married or in a civil partnership, where one low earner can transfer £1,260 of their personal allowance to their partner, who must be a basic-rate taxpayer. The lower earner must therefore earn below the personal allowance threshold of £12,570.

This means couples can reduce their tax bill by up to £252 a year. A couple can apply any time and if eligible, HMRC could backdate the claims for up to four previous tax years (i.e. from 2018/19) to receive a payment of up to £1,242. (Tax years 2015/16, 2016/17 and 2017/18 are now out of time).

Marriage allowance is one of a number of benefits and reliefs available to boost family finances at a time when many are concerned with the rising cost of living.

Marriage allowance claims are automatically renewed every year. However, couples should notify HMRC if their circumstances change.
